The Eye Examination
It is especially important as we get older to have regular eye examinations. Our eye examination will:
1. Detect diseases of the eye which may require treatment e.g. cataracts and glaucoma.
2. Identify poor vision and advise you on how to improve quality of life and enhance safety. (30% of people over 65 are estimated to be visually impaired)
3. Provide a report as part of our Eye Care Plan to care staff to help them understand each resident's needs.
4. Establish if updated spectacles are necessary. (270,000 people over 75 experience unnecessary sight loss due to wearing outdated spectacles or no spectacles at all)
Examining someone with limited communication?
Many of our specialist techniques do not require a full response from our patients and are important when testing patients with communication difficulties. i.e. dementia. We can use advanced methods when measuring for a prescription, such as an Autorefractor and/or a Retinoscope, which will give precise measurements on the strength of lens required to correct the patient's vision.
The importance of glasses for the elderly.
Wearing the appropriate glasses can improve our quality of life by enhancing our view of our environment and improve safety by reducing falls. Our results for care staff will identify when glasses should be worn in the home. Glasses are still the best and most effective means of improving sight among the elderly.
